Sonics Juniors Introduction

The Sonics Junior Section is the community side of Bristol Sonics RLFC focused on getting young people involved in Rugby League throughout Bristol and the surrounding area.

2011 saw the launch of 6 new junior clubs at locations around the city competing in the Bristol Junior League. The aim was to remove many of the barriers that have hindered junior RL in the past such as long distances needed to play games, mismatches between teams and difficulties in getting to training at a single location in Bristol . The junior clubs provide a reasonably local club for players all around Bristol and importantly a local competition structure. This proved to be one of the most exciting junior summer Rugby League developments in the country and will be expanded for 2012 to 2 age groups – Under 14 and Under 16 – at 4 junior clubs.

Bristol Junior League

The concept is simple – junior clubs have been set-up in and around Bristol provide a local opportunity for Under-14 (School years 8 & 9) and Under-16 (School years 10 & 11) players to play RL between May and July. These clubs are coached each week by the Sonics coaching team and will come together to play tournaments on 4 weekends with points awarded towards the junior league.

The emphasis is on maximum participation so all potential players from the local community are encouraged to get involved in their nearest club regardless of whether they have played the game before. The coaching will start with developing core Rugby skills such as passing and tackling, as well as preparing players for the fast and exciting sport of Rugby League. There is also a focus on progressing the coaching to learning about Rugby League game structure and more advanced skills such as kicking and defensive tactics to ensure players can express their potential during the matches.

The Junior Clubs are still very much part of the Bristol Sonics brand and all of the coaching and administration of the clubs will be run from the Sonics. The club badges are all based on the original Sonics design and the names of the teams were also chosen to have a link with the Sonics - although they are all strong RL club names in their own right and with their own identities, they are also all names of aircraft - the link being with the Concorde on the Sonics logo.
